Paul Sharwell
While Paul has a strong background in automated lighting, his beginnings were in amateur theatre. He performed a number of theatrical productions as a child, but upon entering college, he realized that lighting was a lot more fun than acting. Summer and Winter breaks (plus a year off from School), were spent working in NY in the lighting business, and he graduated from Bennington College in 1985 with a BA in lighting design.
For the next few years, Paul based himself in NY, working in theatre and dance and the occasional industrial. In 1988 he trained as a Vari*Lite operator and expanded his lighting work to touring and television. Vanco Orlando, now part of the Production Resource Group (PRG), offered Paul a job in 1990 running their automated lighting department. Although this meant a move to Orlando for several years, Paul was able to continue with his independent design and programming work.
By 1998, Paul was again fully independent and living in Park City, Utah, where he continues to live today, enjoying the benefits of a flourishing freelance lighting career. Paul worked, and continues to work, in multiple lighting disciplines: In the live television arena such shows as the NBC Rockefeller Center tree lighting special, the Latin Grammys, VH-1 Divas, and the GQ Awards; In theatre, The national tour of Saturday Night Fever and a number of shows for the Cleveland-San Jose Ballet.
Recent work includes Lighting director for the 2002 Olympics Medals Plaza, digital lighting projection (Catalyst) for a variety of television and corporate shows, and designing a multitude of corporate events. In this arena, He has designed a number of shows for UVLD, for clients like Forest Labs, Janssen, Reliant, IBM, GM, and Pfizer. He has worked extensively alongside John Ingram as a programmer/Associate designer on large events for IBM, Cadence design systems, Cisco Systems, and the NBC Rockefeller Center tree lighting show.
Still based in Park City, Utah, Paul enjoys snowboarding, horses, and other outdoor sports. He continues to be excited about the variety of experiences the lighting business brings to him, and enjoys the ever-changing combination of technology and creativity that is unique to this field.
